Overview

Fight Night is the 5 For The Fight event inside Qualtrics' X4 summit. 5 For The Fight raises money for cancer research, so the fight is against cancer, and on stage it took the form of a dance show: groups from around Utah, most of them veterans of TV dance competitions, performing back to back on the main stage. It was billed as a battle but it was really a showcase.

The Qualtrics creative team brought us in to make the visuals for the LED wall behind the dancers. Everything on the wall was real-time generative content built in TouchDesigner, and we performed it live from a Novation Launch controller.

The Show

The wall was around 80 feet wide and 20 feet tall, running at 4224 by 1056 pixels. Ahead of the show we had rehearsal video of every performance and art direction from the Qualtrics team for each piece, so each act got its own set of effects and transitions designed around the movements of its song.

On the night there was no timecode. We busked it, cueing looks and riding live parameters from the controller as the dancers hit their marks. We were the sync.

What Else Is Possible

Generative content that a person performs live fits any show where the acts are human and the timing isn't fixed: award shows, dance and music showcases, keynotes with live segments. The visuals stay on the beat because someone is on the beat, and the system can be as reactive as the operator wants it to be.
